Inaugural Saint Francis Pickleball Classic Connects Community
About a dozen pickleball players descended on the Amarillo Netplex on September 27 to take part in the inaugural Saint Francis Pickleball Classic, supporting adoption recruitment efforts throughout the Greater Amarillo area.
Organized by SFM’s Texas team, the event drew strong community support and helped raise awareness of Saint Francis Ministries’ mission.
“We had 32 local sponsors donate,” said Kelsey Neinast, TARE Coordinator. “The Amarillo mayor stopped by, and a local billboard owner even displayed our flyer throughout September. Jessica’s opening speech beautifully captured the heart of the event—our community coming together for a great cause.”
Here’s that speech, delivered by Jessica Hoskins, Director of Permanency and Reunification:
“Good morning, everyone!
Welcome to the Saint Francis Pickle Classic—a pickleball tournament with a purpose!
On behalf of Saint Francis, I want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to everyone here today. Whether you’re a player, volunteer, sponsor, family member, or fan, your presence means more than you know. You’ve helped turn this into something truly special—not just a tournament, but a community coming together for our children.
Today isn’t just about winning matches (though we know some of you are ready to do that!). It’s about connection, support, and making a difference.
Thanks to your time, energy, and generosity, we’re raising funds for foster children and adoption recruitment right here in the Amarillo area. Your participation changes lives, and that’s something to be proud of.
A huge thank-you to our sponsors and donors—your support makes this possible. And to our volunteers and community partners, thank you. You’re the heart of this event.
Let’s make this day full of fun, good sportsmanship, laughter, and a few friendly rivalries on the court. But most of all, let’s remember why we’re here—to celebrate the power of community.
Now, let’s get out there and play some pickleball! Thank you and let the tournament begin!”
“We raised about $17,000 to support adoption recruitment efforts,” said Neinast. “It turned out to be a fantastic kick-off event that we hope to continue.”

Saint Francis to co-sponsor Poverty Simulation in Salina
Saint Francis Ministries will co-sponsor a Poverty Paradigm Simulation on November 18 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Salina, in collaboration with the Saline County Coalition to Reduce Poverty.
During the three-hour exercise, participants will step into the shoes of a family member trying to navigate work, childcare, bills, and community resources while struggling to make ends meet.
“A Poverty Paradigm Simulation is an interactive, powerful, and eye-opening experience that helps people from all walks of life gain a deeper understanding of what it’s like to navigate the challenges of poverty,” said Fr. Andrew O’Connor, Executive Officer for Mission and Ministry. “I especially encourage people of faith to take part, so they can learn how to initiate or strengthen ministries of relief, accompaniment, and advocacy.”
There is no cost to participate, and lunch will be provided. Registration, however, is required. You can do that here: https://tinyurl.com/Nov25PovSim
