This Fourth of July is special this year for a couple of reasons. As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, Saint Francis Ministries continues to celebrate our own 80th anniversary of serving children and families.
Just as America’s story has been built by preceding generations, our mission is to help secure a future for the current generation and those who follow. So, as you gather for cookouts, parades, and fireworks displays this weekend, here are a few tips to keep the holiday safe and fun for kids and adults alike.
Fireworks send more than 9,000 people to the emergency room each year, and children account for a significant share of those injuries. Some simple precautions can avoid a trip to the hospital:
- Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit – hot enough to melt some metals.
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap.
- Make sure fireworks are legal in your area and only purchase and set off fireworks labeled for consumer (not professional) use.
- Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
- Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
- Never try to relight or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
- Follow all instructions and warnings on fireworks and never hold them in your hand unless the instructions specify that you do so.

The safety and well-being of children have always been Saint Francis Ministries’ priority. As we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday and SFM’s 80th anniversary, we remember that the best way to honor the past is to protect the future, one child at a time.
