Monday is National Nonprofit Day once again, so we at Saint Francis Ministries want to thank and acknowledge our community partners and other supporters of our mission. We couldn’t do this life-affirming work without you.
Saint Francis is, of course, a nonprofit organization, as are many of those same supporters and partners. Nonprofits perform essential work in the United States, often providing programs and services that governmental or for-profit organizations either can’t or won’t.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonprofit establishments accounted for 12.8 million jobs, or 9.9 percent of private-sector employment, a reminder of just how much of the country’s work caring for others is carried out through organizations like ours.
It’s challenging work, and those employed in nonprofit jobs rarely make as much as their counterparts in the private sector. That’s okay, though, because as many nonprofit employees will tell you, they don’t do it for the money.
Nonprofits help fill gaps in services, build community, and advocate for positive change. And those who work on the front lines do so primarily from a desire to serve others and to make a difference in the world.
Yet, they can’t do it alone. Nearly every nonprofit organization relies on volunteer and financial support from the communities in which they serve.
