Executive Leadership Team Volunteers at Breakthrough

Around the time Saint Francis Ministries adopted the Volunteer Time Off policy as part of the organization’s 80th-anniversary celebration, the Executive Leadership Team also committed to incorporating community service into its annual strategic planning sessions. In former years, they were divided into small groups for volunteer projects, but last month they served together at Breakthrough Episcopal Social Services in Wichita.

For nearly 40 years, Breakthrough has worked to create an inclusive and supportive community where individuals affected by poverty or mental illness can discover opportunities, foster resilience, and improve their quality of life. They do this through their Clubhouses – Breakthrough in Wichita, Milestone in Hutchinson, Railway in Newton, and Resilience in Salina.

Clubhouses are built upon the belief that every member has the potential to sufficiently recover from the effects of mental illness and lead a fulfilling life as an integrated member of society. Clubhouse members have access to programs that include payee and financial management, housing stability, employment and job readiness, and Breakthrough therapy.

The Saint Francis Foundation has partnered with Breakthrough before, co-presenting with them at the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas’ annual convention in 2024.

“We deeply respect their work and see strong alignment in how both organizations support vulnerable populations, particularly the continuum of care from youth services to adult support,” said Executive Director of Development Ginny Ellis. “With similar geographic footprints across Kansas, we have meaningful opportunities for continued collaboration. When I learned we would be meeting in Wichita, I knew I could call Fr. Andy (Houltberg, CEO) to host our leadership team.”

The entire leadership team volunteered at the Breakthrough Club in Wichita, where they deep-cleaned the kitchen and concessions area, packed breakfast “go bags” for Clubhouse members, and assembled furniture.

“The Breakthrough team welcomed us warmly, shared more about their impact, and engaged our group in hands-on service,” said Ellis. “Our partnership with Breakthrough reminds us what’s possible when organizations align around dignity, community, and long-term support for those we serve.”
