September 2 is a special day for more than one reason this year. Yes, it’s Labor Day, but it’s also the 79th birthday of Saint Francis Ministries.
Yes, you read that right. For nearly 80 years, SFM has worked hard to bring healing and hope to children and families. Starting as a small home for troubled boys, Saint Francis has grown to serve 11,000 children, youth, and families through a broad range of programs and services. This impact is a result of the collective efforts of our staff, volunteers, donors, and supporters.
The Rev. Robert Mize Jr., an Episcopal priest, founded Saint Francis Boys’ Home in 1945 in Ellsworth, Kansas. Fr. Bob had seen too many troubled youth disappear forever into the juvenile justice system and wanted to help them reclaim their lives and futures. He offered hope and redemption.
Over the years, the scope of our ministry has grown, encompassing adoption, behavioral health, Family Centered Treatment®, Fatherhood FIRE, foster care, independent living, in-home prevention, residential programs, and many others.
From our humble beginnings with just 12 boys, Saint Francis Ministries has expanded immensely. Today, we serve thousands of children and youth in seven states: Arkansas, Kansas, Mississippi, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Texas. Our commitment to creating brighter futures has never wavered, and we continue the vital work started by Fr. Bob, ensuring that every child and youth find a path to a more hopeful future.
So, Happy Birthday, Saint Francis Ministries! We can’t wait for next year’s celebration.
