Independence for Youth Aging Out of Foster Care

Every May, families across the nation celebrate the formal entry into adulthood and all it entails as young people graduate from high school. For most graduates, it’s a time of anticipation and independence as they prepare for college, trade school, or a job and living on their own.

For young people aging out of foster care, however, graduation can feel different. Many of them are ill-prepared for the challenges that come with adulthood. Without adequate preparation, the transition to independent living can be overwhelming.

Navigating the complexities of adulthood is particularly challenging for those without the guidance of caring adults. This places youth at increased risk of homelessness, unemployment, health issues, incarceration, dependence on welfare, early parenthood, and vulnerability to various adversities.

Nationwide, about 25,000 young people leave foster care without a family or permanent home. At Saint Francis Ministries, we provide not just instruction and skills, but also a robust support system to ensure a smooth and successful journey into adulthood.

Primarily serving those 18 years and older, SFM’s Independent Living program supports young adults aging out of the foster care system. It offers guidance, resources, and skills training to help these individuals successfully transition to self-sufficient adult life.

Although program specifics vary by state, Independent Living offers a wide range of support, including mentoring, assistance with job and college applications, practical money management guidance, and resources for rent and educational assistance.

For young people aging out of foster care, independence doesn’t mean going alone. It means having the tools, the confidence, and the community to step into the future with confidence.
