Saint Francis community partners are integral to the mission

More than 1,000 Saint Francis Ministries employees serve children and families in six states. That’s a lot. Yet, the number of those needing healing and hope is even larger. That’s why we rely on our community partners so much. Their shared concern for the children, teens, and families in our care makes it possible for us to go above and beyond simply providing for their basic needs.

One of our most valued partners is Scheels-Wichita, which recently sponsored the 2nd annual “Shop with a Cop” event, during which 10 kids in SFM care received a $500 shopping spree. Through SFM’s partnership with the Wichita Police Department, each youth was paired with an officer who joined them for breakfast and shopping.

Saint Francis and Scheels developed the event in 2023 to give kids in the Wichita area an extra special Christmas. Since youth in foster care most often encounter police during difficult times in their lives, it was hoped that by partnering with an officer, they could begin to build more positive connections with law enforcement.

Each teen also invited their foster parents and siblings to enjoy treats and spend time in the gaming areas of the store, bowling and playing video games.

“Saint Francis is so thankful for community sponsors like Scheels,” said Shaynna Brown, a development officer with the Saint Francis Foundation. “Children in foster care often feel like they don’t fully belong to any one family or community, so community-based events can have a profoundly positive impact by helping them feel supported and loved in several ways. Events, like “Shop with a Cop” provide foster children with an opportunity to connect with others who share their experiences and can help combat feelings of isolation and loneliness.”

Since Scheels opened their Wichita store in July 2023, the sporting goods store has made a point to collaborate with local community organizations, including Saint Francis. This is good news for both the city of Wichita and the children and families we serve. The Saint Francis Foundation hopes for a long-term relationship with Scheels and other local partners so that together, we can continue to bring healing and hope to children and families.

What about you? Is there room in your year to join us in our work? Is there room in your life to bring healing and hope to children and families? If so, learn more at https://saintfrancisministries.org/foundation/.
