The traditional kick-off to summer, Memorial Day weekend brings to mind outdoor family fun – grilling, swimming, camping, boating – you get the picture. And since Saint Francis is all about families, we love the holiday. Yet with summer also comes risk, especially to children and youth. Last week, we posted some reminders about those risks, and we hope you’ll keep them in mind as you go about your activities this weekend. The American Safety Council offers some specific tips about how to keep your celebration safe.
Most importantly, we hope you’ll set aside some time this weekend for reflection, considering that the reason behind Memorial Day is to honor and remember those who sacrificed their lives in defense of our nation. Initially called “Decoration Day,” the first national observance took place on May 30, 1868, to honor Union soldiers who had perished in the Civil War. While Veterans Day honors all who served in the U.S. military, and Military Appreciation Month (this month, by the way) honors veterans and their families, Memorial Day specifically remembers those who died. In recognition, communities around the country hold special observances, often in cemeteries where the graves of veterans are decorated with flags and flowers. Perhaps, you’ll consider attending one to honor those who died and add depth and reflection to your weekend?
Regardless of how you spend your weekend, we hope it’s safe, fun, and meaningful for your entire family.
