Substance Use Prevention Helps Protect Families

Each October, Substance Use and Misuse Prevention Month highlights the vital importance of preventing substance abuse, honoring those who have died due to substance use, and supporting those in recovery. Substance use often undermines family stability, causing separation or loss of safe home environments for children. Research shows that the younger a person begins using alcohol or other drugs, the higher their lifetime risk of misuse or addiction.

That’s why Saint Francis is committed to helping individuals and families. Our alcohol and drug counseling programs recognize that each person’s journey to recovery is unique; we favor a tailored approach rather than a one-size-fits-all model.

Our outpatient and intensive outpatient programs are evidence-based and family-centered, designed to support:

  • Pre-adolescents and adolescents facing substance-use challenges
  • Adults seeking sustainable recovery solutions — focusing on healing body, mind, and spirit
  • Families navigating the complexities of substance use impacts

Still, people struggling with substance use need the ongoing support of family and friends alongside a strong treatment program.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA):

  • The percentage of people aged 12 or older with a drug use disorder increased from 8.7 percent in 2021 to 9.8 percent in 2024.
  • Among adolescents aged 12-17, about 8.5 percent (about 2.2 million) had a past-year SUD in 2023.
  • A recent data spotlight shows that among adolescents 12-17, non-use of alcohol, nicotine products, and illicit drugs is going up.

These figures underscore the significance of prevention. While many young people avoid substance use, those who begin early face higher risks over time.

By focusing on prevention, we aim to:

  • Prevent the initiation of substance use
  • Prevent progression from use to a substance use disorder
  • Prevent and reduce the harms associated with substance use

Is there room in your day to support someone who’s struggling with addiction?
