Uplift. Defend. Transform. That’s the theme of this year’s National Social Work Month, and it speaks directly to what social workers do every day.
This year’s theme honors the social work profession’s core mission: to enhance human well-being, meet the basic needs of all people, and give special attention to those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. In a time of deep cultural, political, and economic division across our nation, the ability of social workers to uplift, defend, and positively transform the lives of the millions they serve is needed now more than ever.
At Saint Francis Ministries, we see this mission lived out daily. Our social workers stand on the front lines, walking alongside children, families, and communities facing some of life’s most difficult moments. They uplift those who have been knocked down, defend those who cannot advocate for themselves, and work tirelessly to transform circumstances that can seem impossible to change.
But no one does this work alone. Saint Francis social workers collaborate with community partners, local businesses, and nonprofit and government organizations to ensure that neighbors living on the margins get the help they need to heal and find hope. And without our foster, kinship, and adoptive families, we couldn’t keep children safe and secure while they await permanency.
As the National Association of Social Workers points out, social work remains one of the fastest-growing professions in the United States because compassionate people continue to answer the call. And that’s a good thing.
This month, we offer our gratitude to the social workers at Saint Francis, in our community, and to everyone who supports them in their life-affirming work.
