Hope in Every Story: Honoring Mental Health and Trauma Awareness Month

May is National Mental Health and Trauma Awareness Month, a time to remember those whose struggles often go unseen, and to reaffirm our commitment to both healing and hope.

Over the last 80 years, Saint Francis Ministries’ work has grown to include foster care, adoption, behavioral health, residential programs, Family Centered Treatment®, and in-home prevention, all based on the conviction that children and families deserve to be met with compassion at their most vulnerable moments. The children we serve have often been wounded by profound loss, instability, and trauma. Left alone, those wounds can last a lifetime, or even generations.

Health care equity is important to Saint Francis, and it’s based on the belief that quality mental health care should not be a privilege. You can learn more about it in Episode 8 of our video series, “Conversations”. For more than three decades, our Outpatient Behavioral Health department has also dedicated itself to bringing healing and hope to individuals and families, and more recently, to offering telehealth to provide accessible online services alongside in-person care. Such access matters because geography and circumstance should never be barriers to getting help. We work to ensure accessible mental health and substance abuse treatment for those most in need, including those who traditional systems of care have historically underserved.

Mental health awareness matters because silence can be as harmful as the trauma itself. When we normalize these conversations, when we recognize that struggling is human and that help is available, we take away shame’s power. That’s the culture Saint Francis Ministries works to build every day.

We believe deeply in the dignity and worth of every individual, and we remain committed to ensuring that no child or family is defined by their past. This month, we invite you to join us. Talk openly about mental health. Check on your neighbors. And if you feel called, support the work that makes healing possible for every family, in every community.

Together, there is hope in every story.
